Rooibos, a South-African story

Rooibos (the Aspalathus linearis plant ) has been used for hundreds of years by the “bush people” as a natural remedy due to its powerful and natural healing properties. Rooibos is handpicked and naturally dried under the African sun. It will only grow on the limestone slopes of the Cedarberg Mountains near Cape Town in South Africa.

Rooibos is pronounced “roy+boss” and due to its red colour is also often called Red Tea or Bush Tea. It has boomed in international popularity. In the last ten years exports have increased by 400%.

Mma Ramotswe famously played a role in this. In the series of books, The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander Mccall Smith, she drinks copious amount of Rooibos tea. Today Rooibos is sold as a tea in all major supermarkets and health stores and even big brands Tetleys and Twining have added Rooibos to its ranges.
